Tri Fan

Not only was Boyd Coddington responsible for creating the world’s first made to order custom wheel business, but one of his most iconic designs was also a first. The Tri Fan was the world’s first 3 spoke true directional wheel. This one of a kind wheel was featured on the @mitsubishimotors powered Aluma Coupe and spawned several variations like the Ninja featured on the iconic 1957 custom Chezoom. Attached are some other rare variations of the Tri Fan.

We sat down with world famous Hot Rod photographer Randy Lorentzen. Randy has a long history of photographing some very iconic cars for Hot Rod Magazine and many other automotive publications. One of which is very special to us at Hot Rods by Boyd and Hot Rod Magazine. Randy is responsible for the iconic Cadzilla spread which resulted in that issue being the best selling Hot Rod Magazine of all time. We got the full backstory of how Randy started out in photography and ended up crossing paths with Boyd Coddington and Billy Gibbons to capture the greatest custom of all time.

A lot of people remember Duane Mayer as the hot headed foreman of Boyd Coddington’s Garage on the hit Discovery Channel show , American Hot Rod. What most people don’t know is that Duane’s history and relationship with Boyd goes back into the mid-eighties when Duane dropped everything he had in Wisconsin to head out to California to live the American hot rodding dream. We sat down with Duane and he took us through that long history to give us some insight on himself, Boyd, and the evolution of hot rodding in California in the 80’s and 90’s.

Podcast Episode 7 – Keith Russell

We caught up with Keith Russell while he was in town to attend the Grand National Roadster Show in Pomona Ca. Growing up Keith Russell was like a big brother to me. I was just starting high school when he left his home state of Washington to come to California and work for my dad. Keith jumped in head first learned how to paint cars like a master. Keith worked for my dad for 10 years and had his hand on a lot of projects. One of which was his paint job on Dennis Varni’s 1929 Roadster which won an AMBR award in 1991. Keith remains to be one of the top car painters in the country.  We had a great time talking about the past and sharing some stories of the glory days in the epicenter of hot rodding which was Hot Rods by Boyd.
