The Birth of Smooth: The Vern Luce Coupe
Hot Rods by Boyd and Maximum Drive Magazine are proud to announce the Birth of Smooth: The Vern Luce Coupe. This documentary tells the story of the Vern Luce Coupe. The car that defined the Boyd Look. In 1981 my dad rolled out the Vern Luce Coupe and it changed the direction of hot rodding forever. This is the story. We hope you enjoy it.
Special thanks to Jason Mulligan, Marcel Venable, Bob Bauder, Diane Coddington, Gary Humenik, Gary and Wendy Brown, and Maximum Drive Magazine.
Hot Rods by Boyd and the Vern Luce Coupe featured in the new Maximum Drive magazine
The latest issue of Maximum Drive magazine hits stores today. Last year we had the pleasure of having the Vern Luce Coupe stay with us for awhile. The Coupe wasn’t the first car my dad built but it was the first car that defined what is now known as the Boyd Look and changed the direction hot rodding and custom cars were going in the late 70’s and early 80’s. We had a great time taking the coupe out to shows and Jason Mulligan of Maximum Drive was there to document it. Jason put together a really nice article that talks about my dad, the coupe, and it’s important role in Hot Rodding and Boyd Coddington history.

New Signature Series Griffin
No creature in ancient mythology is more bad ass than the Griffin. With the body of a lion and the wings and head of an eagle the Griffin eats unicorns for lunch. Our latest Signature Series wheel will definitely be a powerful addition to complete your next project so we named it after our favorite creature of myth . The Griffin is shown here in 20″ with a combination Tungsten Center and Polished windows and lip. The Griffin combines elements of a classic five spoke and wide spoke wheels of the 60’s. Nothing is spared in regards to detail and finishing. The Griffin comes in a variety of widths in 17″, 18″ and 20″ diameters. We can also do the Griffin in full polish along with our special Coddington Coating combination finishes. For more information give us a call.
Long time Boyd friend and employee, Pete Peterson, passes away
This past weekend long time Hot Rods by Boyd driver and friend Pete Peterson passed away. Pete Peterson started working for my dad before I can remember. They called him Purple Pete because of his beyond red face. Pete was hard to miss with his white curly hair and that red face and the great attitude. Pete was my dad’s go to guy when it came to hauling a car cross country or going to a car show. Some of you might remember Pete from the 90’s when he used to drive Big Red and Big Yellow attending car shows for Hot Rods by Boyd and Boyds Wheels across the country. Pete was notorious for his sayings. My dad could call him at 3am to go pick up a car back east and he’d hop in truck and say “It all pays the same”. Pete was the posterchild for the saying “Don’t work hard, work smart”. I don’t know how many times we’d get to a car show and he’d tell me to get up on top of the rig to put up the awnings(which easily took a couple hours start to finish) and Pete would say”I’ll be right back I need to go find a screwdriver”. 2 hours later he would show up once we had it all torn down or put up with that screwdriver. So Pete was smart by making lots and lots of friends across this country so a helping hand was never too far away for him. Pete had an uncanny knack of schmoozing people over and getting into places for free or a small fee. The stories of Pete getting into the Winternationals every year with a box of donuts for the people at the gate are absolutely true.
We will miss Pete. I am thankful that I have many fond memories of the guy and I want to thank him for all the ‘Indian Tricks’ he taught me over the years.
