The Birth of Smooth: The Vern Luce Coupe
Hot Rods by Boyd and Maximum Drive Magazine are proud to announce the Birth of Smooth: The Vern Luce Coupe. This documentary tells the story of the Vern Luce Coupe. The car that defined the Boyd Look. In 1981 my dad rolled out the Vern Luce Coupe and it changed the direction of hot rodding forever. This is the story. We hope you enjoy it.
Special thanks to Jason Mulligan, Marcel Venable, Bob Bauder, Diane Coddington, Gary Humenik, Gary and Wendy Brown, and Maximum Drive Magazine.
Hot Rods by Boyd and the Vern Luce Coupe featured in the new Maximum Drive magazine
The latest issue of Maximum Drive magazine hits stores today. Last year we had the pleasure of having the Vern Luce Coupe stay with us for awhile. The Coupe wasn’t the first car my dad built but it was the first car that defined what is now known as the Boyd Look and changed the direction hot rodding and custom cars were going in the late 70’s and early 80’s. We had a great time taking the coupe out to shows and Jason Mulligan of Maximum Drive was there to document it. Jason put together a really nice article that talks about my dad, the coupe, and it’s important role in Hot Rodding and Boyd Coddington history.

New Signature Series Griffin
No creature in ancient mythology is more bad ass than the Griffin. With the body of a lion and the wings and head of an eagle the Griffin eats unicorns for lunch. Our latest Signature Series wheel will definitely be a powerful addition to complete your next project so we named it after our favorite creature of myth . The Griffin is shown here in 20″ with a combination Tungsten Center and Polished windows and lip. The Griffin combines elements of a classic five spoke and wide spoke wheels of the 60’s. Nothing is spared in regards to detail and finishing. The Griffin comes in a variety of widths in 17″, 18″ and 20″ diameters. We can also do the Griffin in full polish along with our special Coddington Coating combination finishes. For more information give us a call.
2014 Good Guys Del Mar and Boyd Coddington Memorial Award
Another great Del Mar Good Guys show. Definitely one of the best venues for a California car event. A stone’s throw to the beach, beautiful weather, and as always some of the best cars in So Cal come out for the event. Gregg and I were excited once again to hand out our father’s memorial award. This year the award went to a 1940 Pontiac woody owned by a member of the DuPont family. The award was accepted on behalf of Mr. DuPont by the shop that built this beautiful woody, Hot Rods and Custom Stuff out of Escondido, CA. This car caught our eye right off the bat. It’s rare to see these Pontiac woodies and to see one built to this level was amazing. The work done by Randy Clark and his team is just amazing. Interesting enough that the winner of the first Boyd Coddington Memorial award, Andy Meeh, does all the paint work at Hot Rods and Custom Stuff. Andy and his family drove the woody through winners circle to accept the award. I was happy this year to share the experience with my two daughters, Jenna and Stella. Once again a great time and we look forward to next year.

Will the REAL Junk Yard Dog please stand up!!
Let’s set the record straight. The Junk Yard Dog that Hot Rods by Boyd produces is the original. If your Junk Yard Dog is 1pc cast and it’s stamped made in China it’s not the real deal. Chris Coddington and Hot Rods by Boyd produce the original JYD designed by the legendary Boyd Coddington. Like all other Hot Rods by Boyd wheels the cast JYD is a custom built 2pc wheel offered in diameters 17, 18 and 20″ in a range of bolt patterns and widths. Every Junk Yard Dog is built to order and made to your backspace specifications. Custom finishes like the Charcoal Ceramic coated center and polished lip you see below are our specialty. Perfected with Charcoal Center and Brushed lip
Pictured is a 20×12 Perfected with a Charcoal Center and a brushed lip. On this one we painted the entire center instead of masking off the polished highlights. We love the look. The Coddington Ceramic Coating really highlights well on this wheel. We can do a variety of finishes on any of our wheels. Use your imagination and give us a call. 866-612-2693
