Good Guys West Coast Nationals 2013
This past weekend we attended the Good Guys West Coast Nationals in Pleasanton, CA. This is probably the best show on the west coast and is a must attend for any hot rodder in the western US. This year celebrated the 27th anniversary of this show and it definitely seemed like the biggest one to date. Duane Mayer of American Hot Rods and myself took the trip up to Pleasanton with the Vern Luce Coupe and our wheel display in tow. Good Guys set us up with a really nice spot in front of winners circle and we were lucky enough to have some really cool Boyd cars at our booth. David Lozano brought out the 32 Sedan my dad built at the Orange Ave shop for Don Smith. David takes amazing care of this car and it still turns heads. One of the best looking sedans and one of my favorite Boyd cars. Jerry Ruskin brought out his 33 Vicky and displayed it at our booth. This 33 Vicky was started at the hot rod shop on Monroe St but only got to the primer stage before it was sold. Having this Vicky parked at our booth next to the coupe was something to see. They looked like a reunited brother and sister sitting there side by side. Saturday’s attendance was insane. The busiest I have ever seen it. We had our new 2013 wheel line up there along with some new additions and we talked to tons of people and handed out tons of catalogs. While I am at the car show working it doesn’t really seem like it. Catching up with old friends, talking to spectators and potential customers make the whole time enjoyable. I had a great time hanging out with Duane and watching him interact with the fans. We’ll be back again next year. Special thanks to Dave Lozano, Jerry Ruskin, John and Caroline Hill, Gary and Wendy Brown, and the Good Guys organization.
The new Signature Series Interceptor
We are proud to announce our latest 5 spoke wheel. The Interceptor. The Interceptor is machined out of rotary forged 6061 Aluminum and welded to a 6061 spun aluminum outer. This wheel is shown here is our Coddington Coatings Ceramic Silver but is also available our other colors and polished. This silver paint really shows the detail of the Interceptor. The Interceptor here is shown in 20″ and is also available in 17,18, and 19″. The Interceptor will fit most 5 spoke applications with the proper spindle and brake clearance. If you have any questions about the Interceptor fitting your specific application you can use this front measuring drawing to fill out and send to us so the experts at Hot Rods by Boyd can verify the fitment for you.
Interview with Street Trucks Magazine on the C/K 25th Anniversary
Street Rod and Custom Radio interview
This week I was able to join Brad Fanshaw on his Street Rod and Custom Radio Show. We had a great time talking about my dad, the old days back at Hot Rods by Boyd, and what is currently going on. Click here to go straight to the podcast of the radio show.
Tribute to a Fallen Friend
This week we lost a very good friend and fellow hot rodder. I first met Anthony Castaneda through my younger brother Gregg around 2000. Anthony was a member of the Shifters Car Club in Southern California. This group of guys were at the forefront of the traditional hot rod rebirth that some labeled as the Rat Rod movement that started to appear in the late 90’s. The Shifters looked and lived the part. Longing for the days of the post war hot rod era what the Shifters lacked in technology they made up for in style and tradition. While I was surrounded by high tech hot rods and high dollar builds at my dad’s shop it was cool to see these guys do their thing and be true to the traditions of hot rodding. One of the first cars that stood out to me when I met the Shifters was Anthony’s Brown Neck Bandito. This green metal flake Roth inspired bubble top roadster sported 59 Chevy rear fins and radir wheels. Out of all the other rods in the group this was the car that drew the attention. Totally cool. Anthony was a great guy. Always down to have a good time and trade a joke or two. The guy was always personable and once he welcomed you in, you were in, you were a friend. Over the last 3 years Anthony and my brother Gregg shared a shop and were roommates. It was always fun to stop by the shop to just hang out and shoot the shit and see what the guys were up to. I will miss those times and I will miss Anthony. Anthony left behind 2 young daughters. There is a fund set up his girls via paypal @ secretweapongregg@gmail.com.
Have a great 4th of July!!
Our new Bronze color on an HR-74
Street Trucks Magazine C/K 25th Anniversary Part 1 – The Pioneers
We were fortunate enough to be interviewed by Street Trucks Magazine to give the Boyd perspective on the 88-98 Chevy and the Sport Truck movement that came out of that body style. While my dad is best known for hot rods it was his contribution to the sport truck scene that put Hot Rods by Boyd and his billet wheels and billet accessories into high gear in the aftermarket. The late eighties and early 90’s were a great time for me watching this unfold. It was right around the time I started driving and watching truck after truck get painted, lowered, and a set of wheels put on it at the shop was great. From before I could remember my dad always had a lowered truck with some one off billet wheels that he made in the garage on it. So when 1988 came around and the new Chevy body style came out it was game on. My dad couldn’t get his hands on one fast enough. The rest is history. Check it out as Dwayne Mayer, Pete Santini, Steve Stanford, and myself talk about those times.
Thanks to Street Trucks Magazine, Jason Mulligan, and Marcel Venable for putting this together. Excited to see part 2.
HR-74 Brushed and Polished
Shown here is our new Pro-Touring HR-74 with a brushed and polished center. The soft satin spoke really allows for a nice contrast to make the polished areas stand out and allow the attention to detail in the machined pockets and windows show through. We pride ourselves on the attention to detail and the range of finishes we offer for our wheels. Shown in 20×10 with 5.25″ backspace.
